As another reviewer has said, "Nightseer" reads like the second book of a trilogy; there is a great deal of backstory that we see in flashback, enough that it would have made sense to tell it in its entirety. I can live with that being only told as backstory, but there is a great deal of story left untold at the end of this book, and I do not have any sense of closure. Yet it seems that Hamilton has no intention of finishing her story, or even continuing it, which is a shame because what story is here is quite well-told. I would like to see more.

Nightseer Laurell K Hamilton 9780451451439 Books Reviews
This first novel by Ms. Hamilton is about a half elven prophet/sorceress named Keleois, once a master, forced to return to school to master a new power. Once imprisoned by a witch and tortured by demons, she managed to kill one of them, and developed new powers. Followers of the witch are all around her, as is Lothar, another half elven prince determined to possess her. He is a dark healer and needs her to inherit his father's kingdom. Apparently there is some sort of competition between him and a brother. This novel is very entertaining, not up to her later standards, but excellent. The only problem is alot of loose ends that will never be tied up.
All successful writers sooner or later learn that the story begins where the story begins. This particular book has a lot of pre-story, but the reviewers who feel that it needs a prequel are wrong. The author works in the background in such a way that the salient points are obvious, and while they might indeed have made an entertaining story on their own, such a story is by no means necessary to understand and appreciate this one. The only real problem here is that the action is repetitive, therefore tedious. Fewer fights (or shorter fights) and more characterization would have been appreciated. Nevertheless, I liked this story very much. It doesn't need a prequel, but it sure could use a sequel!
After reading all 8 of Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake series and "A Kiss of Shadows" I honestly thought I knew what to expect from Hamilton as a writer. When her debut novel was recently re-released I naturally picked it up, expecting to find the 'prototype' of the Blake series. I was more than a little surprised to find that "Nightseer" was in another genre entirely and that Laurell Hamilton is capable of excellent traditional fantasy. One can see hints of Anita in Keleios Nightseer, but for the most part it is as if we had stepped into an entirely different world.
Noble half elf Keleios is endowed with three magical powers. Originally she was a master enchanter and a skilled prophet. Suddenly she demonstrated powers as a sorcerer, and has had to relinquish her master rank and return to the school at Zeln's Keep to learn to control her new power. When Keleios was a child her mother was destroyed by the black witch Harque. In Keleios' quest for revenge she has walked the pit of Hell, and bears the mark of demonic corruption. Although she is not comfortable with the taint, she is able to control both black and white disciplines. In addition, she is also expert with weapons, particularly those bespelled or enchanted.
Entering a state of prophecy in the dreaming rooms at Zeln's Keep, Keleios has a horrible vision, the Keep under attack and destroyed, many of the residents enslaved or killed. She barely has time so make her warnings before the attack is under way. The Keep betrayed by one of Harque's own students. Against demonic forces Keleios is only able to assemble a small group of survivors. Lothor the dark healer, whose price is betrothal, Tobin, companion mage and close friend, Master Eroar, a true dragon and Poth, the cat. This team is betrayed into the hands of Harque and must struggle to free themselves from the witch and her minions.
This is pretty strong stuff. Hamilton, especially in her earlier novels is capable of managing a tremendous amount of plot complexity and action. The only time for relaxation here comes right after the words 'the end.' Hamilton also builds her characters very naturally. Unlike the Blake series, "Nightseer" is written in the third person, but Hamilton provides plenty of insight into Keleios, and makes masterful use of dialogue to flesh out the rest of the characters. This is a very skilled performance for a debut novel. Somewhat reminiscent of Barbara Hambly's work.
My only complaint is that "Nightseer" feels like the middle volume of a trilogy. There is clearly a great deal of story that preceded it, and too many threads are left incomplete at the end. One can only hope that someday Laurell Hamilton will be motivated to return to Keleios' world and tell the rest of the story.
Nightseer was an ok read but it was certainly far from a wonderful or compelling read.
Keleios was the typical unstoppable sorceress main character. The wounds she takes, and lives from, the enemies she fights, and the magic she spells is all straight from a Dungeons and Dragons video game. Her character is night invincible and she ALWAYS pulls off her spells whenever she needs to. 'Oh oh, the slime monster is coming but i need to finish this spell or else i will die!' (Spell is pulled off and saves her with a second to spare). Rinse and repeat through the novel.
Also, what was with her relationship with Lothar? Did she want to kill him? Was she slowly growing to like him?
And Nesbit? I thought he was a major villain that needed killing? But no, he is Keleios' brother-in-law and we never see him ever again...
Nesbit screams for a sequel down the line but we shall see...
All in all it was a average read but this was Hamiltons first novel, and it shows.
If you go into this book expecting what you read in her Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series you wont find anything like her two main series.
This book is incredibly well written. You want the story to continue; you need it to.
I read this book years ago when her Anita Blake series was 5-6 books into it and i have been hoping since that she would pick up where this one left off. It stands alone as is but the story line is so interesting you want to know more.
What makes this book so interesting is it belongs in a list of Magic and Wizard fantasy books with authors of high ranking like R.A.Salvatore,Margaret Weis & Piers Anthony .
Enough reviews are listed here explaining about the story line so their is no need to expand on that. Just wanted to get the point across that this is in a special class of its own.
Read and enjoy!
Going into this book, and being a fan of the Merry Gentry series and the first bit of Anita Blake. I was curious to see what her first book had in store for me.
I loved it, and I would have loved to see more about the MC, and her now consort.
